The SPIN and PUSH TEST

The SPIN TEST – Hold the putter between your hands just below the head with the grip pointing down. Now spin it between your hands. Does it waggle? The more waggle; the more unbalanced the putter actually is.

The PUSH TEST – Now put the end of the grip on the floor with one hand. With one of your free hand’s finger, push on the face where the ball is to be struck. If the face moves the sweet spot is non-existing.

If your putter fails one or even both, how can you putt accurately?

As well as the SPIN and PUSH TEST there are other factors impeding your ability to putt well. GLIDE, IMPACT, and LAUNCH.

GLIDE is how well the putter head moves across the green. Sharp leading edges can dig into the green.

IMPACT is what the putter head does to propel the ball on the intended line. If a putter is not balanced then the putter will torque at contact causing the ball to roll off the line.

LAUNCH is how the putter head propels the ball on the intended line. Many putters have a positive loft which will cause the ball to jump with backspin. Putted balls should roll with a positive spin.
